ScurtDae (David Aaron Ruff) was born on April 21, 1998, in San Diego, California. His music career started out as a passion to write poetry until a musician friend suggested he use those words and put them to music. ScurtDae attended Platt College in San Diego, California working on his degree in Graphic Arts and Marketing. There he found like-minded creative and highly talented students and teachers to both inspire and support his career choice.
“My path to music is not unusual. It came from the need to express myself. In order to do that it required that my creative process be authentic. Being authentic means, I stay true to who I am - knowing that I am not perfect, nobody is. Finding out that I had an anxiety disorder my first thought was - am I alone in this? Sharing my music with others not only allowed me to understand that I was not alone – but that others needed to know they were not alone in this either. Back to Life was born out of that realization. That there was not only hope but an amazing opportunity to create something wonderful from the experience. Those that have been with me from the beginning inspire me – I like to write songs that tell their stories as well.
I was raised in a small urban community outside of San Diego. My dad and mom, although divorced, remained friends and have always been there for me. My dad has always been my example and continues to inspire me to be both a good man and a great father. My mom taught me to better understand the world and what it means to sacrifice for your family. She loved to quote Vince Lombardi to me – “Success only comes before Work in the dictionary”. She taught me that it is important to continually educate yourself - inspiring me to get my degree. But music is my passion – it requires hard work and being a realist in order to keep the passion going. I love music – but just like anything else music is a business that requires commitment. I like to keep “the grass cut short” at ScurtDae Productions. I work with a small dedicated team who understand hard work. We know we will not always get a win and that we are not always going to see eye to eye – and that is ok. That is what makes it great. We all share in the success of ScurtDae productions.
I write my own music and collaborate with other artists I love. I aspire to provide my listener with lyrics that have deep meaning. Sometimes I write songs that are meant to just simply escape. In my writing I use not only my own personal experiences but the stories of others, creating lyrics born of a variety of different issues and life situations. At times I think of my lyrics as a prayer. People love party music and upbeat songs. But sometimes when you need to feel or understand, you need something different.
I launched my first Album BirthDae on my 21st birthday April 21, 2019. I remember hoping that at least a few people would hear my songs. The release was simply organic. I hit 100 listens and I will always remember the feeling of both excitement and validation of my new career path. I am extremely humbled and grateful for all the support I have been given in my life by my family, friends, collaborators, and most importantly by the fans that have allowed me this blessing in life.
